“The Evening The Lights Went Out” by Karen White – Guide Assessment @penguinrandomhouse.bsky.social #TheNightTheLightsWentOut #KarenWhite #BacklistReview #BookReviewPublisher's description of "The Night The Lights Went Out" by Karen Whitemy thoughtsNewly divorced Merilee is a mom of two younger youngsters. She needs to realize a sure measure of independence by driving a automotive she will really afford, and by renting a cabin from an aged girl named Sugar Prescott. Her new house is in Candy Apple, Georgia, an elite suburb of Atlanta. A spot the place class and one-upmanship appear of inordinate significance. Merilee’s new monetary state of affairs ensures that she can’t be in the identical ‘league’ as the opposite youngsters’s moms. She is okay with this. But, Heather Blackford, one of the fashionable  girls takes her beneath her wing and befriends her.

Merilee’s ex-husband has a brand new lady, who simply occurs to be the elementary college instructor of their younger daughter, AND, she simply occurs to expect his youngster. These salacious info are mentioned on a neighborhood weblog which appears to be adopted by all of Merilee’s new neighbours. The weblog has an nameless writer – recognized solely as ‘your neighbour’.

Sugar Prescott, in her nineties, is a crotchety and cantankerous outdated girl. She has little household left and has a traumatic and vibrant historical past.  The novel incorporates many flashback scenes of Sugar’s life as a baby and a younger lady which I actually loved. Sugar was by far my favorite character within the novel.

Sugar appears to see a bit of herself in her new lodger, Merilee. The 2 girls bond, albeit in a slightly reluctant approach…

Finally Merilee turns into embroiled in a neighborhood homicide case. She involves know who her actual buddies are in consequence.

My one main quibble with the story was Merilee’s seemingly naive and fewer than sensible actions surrounding her passwords and social media. It appeared incongruous together with her character which in each different side appeared mature and clever.

The novel scrutinizes the position that destiny performs in ‘beginning over’, and has themes of constancy, friendship, and revenge.  The setting was effectively described and evoked the environs of suburban Georgia and the gossip mongers that dwell there.

Informed with the allure and charm of a southern girl, this story was a profitable mix of girls’s fiction, homicide thriller, and romance.  The ending leaves the reader feeling glad, and desirous to learn extra by this gifted writer.
