“Home windows” is an enthralling debut novel that includes vignettes of the shopkeepers of the small Scottish city of Linlithgow. There’s to be a contest for window shows within the lead up time to Christmas. We meet a number of totally different shopkeepers and get a glimpse of their lives as they plan their shows.

An over zealous councilwoman who organizes the competitors. An aged man who runs a toy store. A younger man with private baggage who runs a bicycle store. A bodily handicapped florist. A Turkish household who run a barbershop. A middle-aged lady who runs a present store. A lonely, middle-aged lady who travels in all places by bicycle.

That is undoubtedly a novel that speaks to the energy of ‘neighborhood’. We meet a number of good, and some not-so-nice folks. We go to an enthralling Scottish city. What’s to not love?

Along with the  story of the shopkeepers, there’s a frisson of romance, and a touch of thriller. It’s a generally humorous, generally poignant, glimpse into small city Scotland that’s peopled with characters that I wish to meet in individual. I fairly loved the go to.
